The hub of central Albacete and the place every walking tour starts, Plaza del Altozano is a generous square at the meeting of Calle Mayor, Calle Marqués de Molins and the Paseo de la Libertad. The architecture is mostly turn-of-the-20th-century: the elegant Hotel Gran Hotel on one side, the modernist Banco de España building on another, and the Diputación Provincial in stripped neoclassical style.
A small monument to the Knife-maker (Monumento al Cuchillero) sits in the centre. The square is at its best in the early evening, when most of the city seems to converge on the surrounding cafés for the paseo.
