Palace of Antonio de Mendoza

The Palace of Antonio de Mendoza is a 16th-century Renaissance palace in the centre of the old town, built by a member of the same Mendoza dynasty responsible for the Palacio del Infantado. It is a more restrained building than the Infantado — the facade is plateresque rather than gothic — but it is handsomely proportioned and in good condition. The building now houses a government office, which limits access to the interior, but the courtyard can sometimes be entered through the main gate.

The palace represents the second wave of Mendoza building activity in Guadalajara — the first, Gothic-Mudéjar phase of the late 15th century gave way to a more fully Italian Renaissance sensibility in the 16th, and this building marks that transition clearly.
