Fundación Gregorio Prieto

Gregorio Prieto is the most celebrated artist to come out of Valdepeñas. He made his reputation in the 1930s and 40s with portraits, surrealist-inflected drawings, and a style that drew on both Spanish tradition and the modernist circles he moved in across Europe.

The foundation in his birthplace holds a permanent collection of drawings, paintings, and personal memorabilia, including portraits of Lorca, Dalí, and other figures from Prieto's social world. The drawings are the strongest part of the collection — precise, confident line work that holds up well against the more finished paintings.

The museum is small enough to see properly in an hour. Worth combining with a walk around the old centre rather than making it a stand-alone trip.

A story
Prieto spent much of his career in London and Paris, moving in circles that included Lorca, Dalí, and the Bloomsbury group. He returned to Valdepeñas in his later years and left his personal collection to the town. The foundation's building is the house where he was born in 1897 — modest from the outside, carefully preserved inside.
