The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the largest and oldest building in Valdepeñas, a late Gothic church that anchors the old centre near the Plaza de España. From the outside it reads as solid and plain — thick limestone walls, a single tower — but the interior is more impressive than the exterior suggests.
The nave is broad and well-proportioned, with Gothic vaulting overhead and a carved Renaissance altarpiece that took decades to complete. The choir stalls are worth a close look. Light enters through narrow windows set high in the walls, giving the interior a cool dimness that feels appropriate to the heat outside.
Entry is free during opening hours, which are limited to mornings and early evenings. If you find it locked, check the times posted on the door — it is well worth a return visit.
