El Xampanyet is a Barcelona institution on one of the oldest streets in the Born quarter, a few metres from the Picasso Museum. The bar serves its own house cava alongside anchovies from L'Escala, Iberian charcuterie, and simple tapas in a room lined with ceramic tiles that has not changed materially since 1929.
The cava is cheap and good. The anchovies are among the best in the city. The atmosphere is convivial and genuinely local despite the location on Barcelona's most tourist-trampled medieval street. Come for lunch; it fills up quickly and closes in the afternoon.
