Barcelona makes an excellent base for exploring Catalonia. Several fascinating destinations lie within easy reach by train or car.
Montserrat (55 km) is a dramatic mountain monastery perched on jagged sandstone peaks. The Benedictine monastery dates to the 9th century, and the boys' choir sings at 1pm on weekdays. Take the rack railway from Monistrol for stunning views.
Figueres (140 km) is home to the Salvador Dali Theatre-Museum, designed by Dali himself. The museum is as surreal and bizarre as the artist, and easily worth the train journey. RENFE trains run several times daily.
Girona (100 km) is a beautiful medieval city with a well-preserved Jewish quarter, a striking cathedral and excellent restaurants. High-speed trains from Barcelona Sants take about 40 minutes.
Sitges (40 km) is the nearest attractive beach town, known for its lively atmosphere, cosmopolitan culture and pretty waterfront. Easy to reach by commuter train.
Tarragona (100 km) has some of the finest Roman ruins in Spain, including an amphitheatre overlooking the sea. About an hour south along the coast.
