Olympic Port

Barcelona's 1992 Olympic marina turned waterfront promenade

Built for the 1992 Summer Olympics as part of Barcelona's dramatic waterfront redevelopment, the Port Olimpic transformed what had been an industrial coastline into a modern marina lined with restaurants and bars. Frank Gehry's enormous golden fish sculpture marks its southern end and catches the light at every angle.

The marina itself holds several hundred pleasure boats. On summer evenings the terraces along the quay fill up, though the restaurants here lean touristy -- you will eat better a few blocks inland. The real appeal is the broad promenade, the sea views, and the two towers (Hotel Arts and Torre Mapfre) that frame the harbour against the sky.

The port is a short walk south along the waterfront from Barceloneta, or you can take the L4 metro to Ciutadella-Vila Olimpica.
