Antiqua Estacion del Norte

Ornate 1861 rail terminus turned cultural venue

Barcelona's former northern railway terminus, the Estacio del Nord opened in 1861 and served as the city's main rail gateway until through-service shifted to Sants and Passeig de Gracia in the 1970s. The handsome modernista facade, decorated with ceramic mosaics and ornamental ironwork, was restored in the 1990s and the building now houses a police station and occasional cultural events. The adjoining Parc de l'Estacio del Nord, designed by Beverly Pepper, is a pleasant green space with undulating turf sculptures — a good spot to rest if you're walking between the Arc de Triomf and the Ciutadella park area.
