Marimurtra Botanical Garden

The Marimurtra Botanical Garden clings to a cliff above the sea at the north end of Blanes, and the views alone would justify the visit. From the terraced paths you look directly down to the water and across to the rocky headlands of the lower Costa Brava — some of the best scenery on the coast.

The garden holds around 4,000 plant species from the Mediterranean basin and drylands worldwide, arranged along a series of paths that wind down the cliff face. The Cactaceae and succulent collection is particularly impressive. At the lowest point of the garden a classical temple-like structure frames a view straight out to sea. The garden is well maintained and the visit takes between one and two hours depending on how much time you spend at the viewpoints.

A story
Marimurtra was created by the German-born botanist Karl Faust, who bought the clifftop site in 1919 and spent decades cultivating it. Faust was motivated partly by scientific interest and partly by a vision of Mediterranean landscape gardening as an art form in itself. After his death the garden was bequeathed to a foundation that still maintains it today.
