The Gorges del Freser is the deep ravine that the Freser river has cut through the rock between Ribes de Freser and Núria — the dramatic scenery visible through the windows of the rack railway. The gorge can also be walked on the Camí Vell de Núria, a marked trail from Queralbs that follows the river upstream to the sanctuary, gaining around 700 metres over about 7 kilometres and taking two to three hours.
The lower gorge, between Ribes de Freser and Queralbs, is the most spectacular: sheer cliffs, a fast river, and the railway line threading through tunnels and across high bridges. The upper gorge above Queralbs opens gradually into the valley. The path is well-marked but rocky and uneven in places — proper walking shoes are essential. Do not underestimate the descent; loose rock on the downward path catches people out more often than the ascent.
Many visitors walk only one direction and take the rack railway for the other. Going up by train and down on foot is the most popular combination, giving you the dramatic reveal of the valley arrival by rail and the gorge scenery at close quarters on the way down. The coordinates given are roughly the mid-point of the gorge near Queralbs station.
