Llac de Núria

The small lake in front of the sanctuary is the social centre of Núria in summer. Families spread out on the grass around its edges, children paddle in the shallows, and rowing boats can be hired for a gentle circuit — a notable contrast to the stark mountain scenery above. The water is cold even in August, fed by snowmelt from the surrounding peaks.

The lake is artificial, created by a dam built at the same time as the sanctuary complex in the early 20th century, but it sits so naturally in the bowl of the valley that the engineering is easily forgotten. In winter it freezes and the surrounding slopes become the nursery ski area. The reflections of the sanctuary facade in calm weather are the classic photograph of Núria.

Rowing boat hire is available at the lakeside boathouse, run by the sanctuary. Fishing is permitted with the appropriate licence.
