Puigmal Ridge Walks

The ridgeline above Núria marks the border with France, and the walks along it are among the most rewarding in the eastern Pyrenees. The closest high point is Puigmal at 2,913 metres, a straightforward though strenuous ascent of about two to three hours from the valley floor. From the summit on a clear day you can see the Mediterranean to the south and the Pyrenean chain stretching west.

In summer, the chairlift from the valley floor to around 2,350 metres eliminates much of the initial climb, making the ridge accessible to fit walkers without mountaineering experience. From the top of the lift, a marked trail follows the ridge west toward Puigmal, passing several intermediate summits with fine views on both sides. Take the chairlift up, walk the ridge, and descend to the sanctuary in time for the last rack railway down — a full day that requires an early start.

The ridge is entirely above 2,000 metres; weather can change quickly. Carry layers, water, and a map even in summer. Snow can persist on north-facing slopes well into June. The rack railway's last departure from Núria is the hard deadline around which to plan your timing.
