Vapor Buxeda

Vapor Buxeda is a restored nineteenth-century textile factory that now houses cultural facilities — exhibition spaces, a library, and community rooms. The complex preserves the industrial character of the original buildings: tall brick chimneys, large windows designed to maximise light for factory workers, and the heavy masonry that characterised Catalan industrial construction of the era.

The Vapor Buxeda is one of several restored industrial buildings scattered around Sabadell, collectively documenting the physical infrastructure of the city's textile era. The cultural programming in the building varies; check locally what is showing. The exterior is accessible at any time.

A story
The word 'vapor' in nineteenth-century Catalan industrial usage meant any factory powered by steam — and 'vapors' were the engines of Sabadell's economic transformation. The Buxeda family built their factory in the 1860s when steam power was revolutionising the wool industry, and the building represents a pivotal moment when Sabadell shifted from artisan workshops to industrial-scale production. That transformation made families like the Buxedas enormously wealthy and reshaped the town's social structure within a generation.
