Plaça Major

The Plaça Major is the social and commercial heart of Vic, ringed by medieval arcades under which townspeople and visitors have traded, argued, and eaten for centuries. It is one of the finest porticoed squares in Catalonia, and on market days — Tuesday and Saturday — it fills with stalls selling local produce, cured meats, cheeses, and artisan goods.

The square is lined with buildings from several centuries, most with painted facades in faded ochres and creams. The porticoes keep the rain off in autumn and the sun off in summer, and the cafes beneath them are good places to sit and watch the market unfold. Come on a Saturday morning for the liveliest scene.

A story
The market on the Plaça Major has been held every Tuesday and Saturday for more than a thousand years — one of the longest-running weekly markets in Catalonia. In winter, the square fills with stalls selling the local fuet and llonganissa sausages, and the smell of grilled meats drifts through the porticoed arcades.
