Day Trips

Ceuta's position makes it an excellent base for short excursions in two directions.

Tetouan (Morocco) — Forty kilometres south of the border, Tetouan is a UNESCO World Heritage medina and one of the finest examples of an Andalusian-influenced Moroccan city. The historic centre was built largely by Muslim refugees expelled from Spain after 1492, and its architecture — whitewashed houses, intricate tiling, shaded souks — reflects that Andalusian heritage. Take a shared taxi or grand taxi from Fnideq (the Moroccan town immediately south of the Ceuta border) to Tetouan; the journey takes about half an hour. The medina is easily walked in an afternoon.

Tangier (Morocco) — Ninety kilometres to the southwest, Tangier is accessible in a couple of hours by shared taxi or bus from Fnideq. The city was an international zone from 1923 to 1956 and retains a raffish, cosmopolitan character. The Kasbah, the medina markets, and the views across to Spain from Cap Spartel are the main draws. An achievable day trip for those with an early start.

Gibraltar — Visible from the Ceuta waterfront on clear days, the Rock of Gibraltar is about two and a half hours by ferry to Algeciras and then by road. It shares something of Ceuta's character — a small European enclave on a strategic strait, caught between two worlds — but with a distinctly British flavour. Worth visiting for the comparison, and for the Barbary macaques.
