Ermita do Faro

A small stone chapel sitting at 1,187 metres on the Monte do Faro, the highest peak in the local Serra do Faro. The drive up to it climbs through chestnut woods and meadows, then opens onto a bald summit with views over the Miño valley, the Ribeira Sacra, and on clear days as far as the Atlantic.

The hermitage itself is plain and almost always locked, but the spot has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The annual romaría on the second Sunday of August fills the mountain with food stalls, livestock, and pipers — one of the bigger festivals of the year in this part of Galicia.
