Combarro is a fishing village on the Ría de Pontevedra, about 8 km from the city by road. It contains the highest concentration of hórreos — Galician stone granaries — of any village in the region, and many of them are built right at the water's edge, giving the waterfront a look unlike anything else in Spain.
The hórreos are raised on stone pillars to keep rats out, topped with crosses to keep evil spirits out (at least in popular tradition), and ventilated on all sides to keep grain dry. Walking the lanes between them in the late afternoon, with the tide coming in beneath the granaries, is one of the more memorable experiences in the Pontevedra area. Frequent buses run from Pontevedra, or it is a pleasant 45-minute cycle along the river path.
