La Peregrina Church was built in 1778 on a circular ground plan that imitates the form of a scallop shell — a nod to the symbol of the Camino de Santiago. It has a neoclassical altarpiece presided over by the image of the Pilgrim Virgin, who was said to guide pilgrims arriving by sea on their way to Compostela. The oversized shell used as a holy water font inside was brought from the Pacific by the Galician admiral Méndez Núñez.
