The Basilica of Santa María la Mayor was commissioned in the 16th century by the Guild of Mareantes, the association of Pontevedra's seafarers. Its façade is one of the masterpieces of Galician Plateresque style — a tall stone screen carved with biblical figures, apostles, and historical characters including Columbus and Hernán Cortés. The work of Cornelius of Holland and João Noble, the church has three aisles separated by columns and a richly detailed baldachin. It stands at the edge of the old town near the riverbank.
