Cíes Islands

The Cíes Islands stand at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo, their dramatic quartzite cliffs and white-sand beaches forming the most spectacular natural sight in Galicia. The three main islands — Monteagudo, Faro, and San Martiño — are protected as part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, with access only by ferry from Vigo (from May to September).

The beaches at Praia das Rodas and Praia de Nosa Señora are among the most beautiful in Spain. The islands have well-marked hiking trails, a lighthouse with panoramic views, a campsite (the only accommodation permitted), and excellent birdwatching — the islands support nesting populations of yellow-legged gulls and European shags. Snorkelling in the clear water between the islands is exceptional.

A story
The Cíes Islands appear in ancient maps as the Insulae Deorum — the Islands of the Gods. Their white-sand beaches are officially protected as part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. In summer, a daily access quota limits the number of visitors to prevent environmental damage; book your ferry ticket in advance or you may not get on.
