Mosteiro de Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil

Romanesque monastery deep in the Sil gorge, reached by a forest trail — one of Galicia's finest medieval buildings

The Mosteiro de Santa Cristina sits on a promontory above the Sil, reached by a trail through chestnut and oak forest that descends from the rim road. The church is Romanesque, built in the 12th century, with a carved apse that contains some of the most sophisticated stone carving in Galicia — hunting scenes, musicians, and fantastical beasts running around the corbels above the east end.

The monastery is best approached on foot from the road above, a descent of about 40 minutes through dense forest. The reward is the building standing alone in the trees, with the river far below and the terraced vineyards visible on the opposite bank. It is possible to see the church interior; opening times vary and it is sometimes closed, but the exterior and setting justify the walk regardless.

A story
The monastery was founded in the 10th century and passed through Benedictine and Cistercian hands before falling into ruin after the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of 1836, when the Spanish government seized monastic property. It was restored in the 20th century after sitting abandoned for nearly a hundred years. The Romanesque apse, carved with hunting scenes and fantastic animals, is among the finest surviving examples in Galicia.
