Mirador de Cabezoas

The best viewpoint over the Sil canyon — looking directly down onto the terraced vineyards

The Mirador de Cabezoas sits on the rim of the Sil canyon and looks directly down several hundred metres to the river and the terraced vineyards on the opposite wall. It is the single most dramatic viewpoint in the Ribeira Sacra and appears on virtually every photograph taken of the region. The drive along the narrow canyon road to reach it is itself scenic.

The viewpoint is accessible by car; park on the roadside and walk a short distance to the railing. Go in the afternoon when the light falls on the vineyards. Other viewpoints along the same rim road — Balcones de Madrid, Mirador de Os Rouchos — are also worth stopping at, and the drive between them makes a satisfying half-day circuit.
