Parador de Vilalba

The Parador Nacional de Vilalba is built around the octagonal tower of the medieval Andrade castle, one of the most distinctive fortress towers in Galicia. The tower itself is open to view from the outside even if you are not staying, and its thick stone walls and unusual eight-sided plan make it worth a short stop on any visit to the town.

If the budget allows, staying here is the obvious choice for the area: the rooms are in a modern annex, but the tower serves as the common areas, and the restaurant serves reliable versions of Galician standards including the local capon when in season. The building dominates the small town centre and is visible from most of Vilalba.

A story
The Parador occupies an octagonal medieval tower built by the Andrade family in the fourteenth century — one of the few surviving examples of Galician-Leonese military architecture from that period. The Andrades were the dominant noble family of inland Galicia, and this tower was both a defensive strongpoint and a status symbol in the flat Terra Chá landscape.
