Estación de Príncipe Pío

Former 1880 railway terminus converted into a shopping centre, keeping its original iron-and-glass structure

A former railway terminus from 1880 converted into a shopping centre in 2003, but worth noting for the spectacular renovation of the 19th-century iron-and-glass train shed, which now serves as a covered retail atrium. The original station infrastructure — columns, roof trusses, iron detailing — is all intact and gives the building a character entirely unlike a purpose-built mall.

The attached Campo del Moro — the formal gardens below the Palacio Real — can be accessed from the station's riverside level. The metro station here also connects to a cercanías (suburban rail) network and a cable-car terminus across the river to Casa de Campo. Metro Príncipe Pío.
