Longoria Palace

Spectacular 1902 Modernista palace built for financier González Longoria, now the Spanish writers' association headquarters

A spectacular Modernista palace built in 1902 for financier Javier González Longoria, now serving as the headquarters of the Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE). The building is one of the finest examples of Catalan Art Nouveau architecture in Madrid — its undulating iron facade, sinuous stone ornamentation, and green-tiled cupola look as if they arrived from Barcelona by mistake.

The interior is not generally open to the public, but the exterior alone is worth a detour. The palace sits at the intersection of Calle Fernando VI and Calle Génova, a short walk from the main Chueca plaza. The contrast with the surrounding 19th-century apartment buildings is startling.
