Cine Doré (Filmoteca Española)

Modernista 1922 cinema building now housing the Filmoteca Española, with films from 2.50 euros

A modernista cinema building from 1922 that is now the home of the Filmoteca Española, the Spanish national film archive, showing classic and world cinema at prices well below commercial cinemas. The programme is eclectic and curated — retrospectives, country focuses, restored prints — and the cinema is one of the genuinely pleasurable cultural institutions in central Madrid.

The entrance hall and facade are on the historic registry; the building was rescued from demolition in the 1980s. The bar in the lobby serves food and is separately popular with locals who never go to the films. Calle de Santa Isabel 3. Metro Antón Martín.
