Lavishly decorated 19th-century mansion on Calle San Mateo recreating Romantic-era domestic interiors

A lavishly decorated 19th-century mansion on Calle San Mateo that recreates the domestic interiors of Romantic-era bourgeois Madrid. The collection spans painting, furniture, decorative arts, and personal objects from roughly 1820 to 1870 — arranged not as a conventional museum but as a lived-in period house, with candlelit salons, theatrical drapery, portrait galleries, and rooms dedicated to writers and composers of the era.

The centrepiece is Goya's late painting of a pistol duel, and the library room is particularly atmospheric. The garden café (open in summer) is among the nicest in central Madrid. Free on Saturdays from 2 pm. Metro Tribunal or Alonso Martínez.
