Sierra de la Tercia

Quiet hiking range north of Lorca, with marked trails and few walkers

The Sierra de la Tercia rises north of Lorca, a long limestone ridge reaching about 1,300 metres. The landscape is the classic dry-Murcia mix of pine forest, holm oak, esparto grass, and rocky outcrops, and on a clear day you can see across to the Sierra Espuña and as far as the coast.

A well-marked network of trails leaves from the village of La Tova and the small visitor centre at the foot of the range. Spring and autumn are the best times to walk — summer temperatures are brutal and water is scarce. You will almost certainly have the trails to yourself.
