Buñol

Inland Valencian town known for La Tomatina, a hill castle, and river swimming holes.

Buñol sits in the hills west of Valencia, close enough for an easy day trip but very different in feel from the coast. Most visitors know the name because of La Tomatina, the tomato fight that takes over the town on the last Wednesday of August. Outside that one wild morning, Buñol is a quiet place of steep streets, water, and old stone.

The town's best sight is Buñol Castle, a Moorish fortress built into the old centre. Below it, the streets drop toward the Buñol River and the green pocket of San Luis Park. A short way out of town, Cueva Turche adds the natural reason to come: a waterfall and swimming hole framed by pale rock.

Buñol works best as a focused day out from Valencia. Come for La Tomatina if you want the spectacle, or come on an ordinary weekday for the castle, the water route, and lunch without the crowds.

Getting There

Buñol is about 40 kilometres west of Valencia. Regional trains on the Valencia-Cuenca line stop at Buñol, and the trip from Valencia Nord usually takes a little over an hour. Driving is straightforward on the A-3, though parking near the centre can be tight during festivals.

For La Tomatina, book transport and tickets ahead. The town's normal scale is small, and the festival changes everything from traffic to crowd control.
