Old Town (Vila Emmurallada)

The Vila Emmurallada — the walled town — is Calpe's historic centre, a compact cluster of whitewashed houses and narrow streets perched above the port on the hill behind the harbour. It is small enough to explore in an hour, but has the feel of an older, quieter Calpe that exists apart from the resort strips along the beaches.

The 15th-century church of Nuestra Senora de las Nieves stands at the heart of the old quarter. The streets around it have a handful of small restaurants and shops. Walk up to the walls for good views over the harbour and out to the Penon de Ifac.

A story
Calpe was repeatedly sacked by Barbary pirates between the 16th and 18th centuries — on one raid in 1609, the entire population was taken into slavery. The walled old quarter was the townspeople's main defence: thick walls, narrow streets to slow attackers, and a church that doubled as a final refuge. The old town you see today was rebuilt largely in the 18th century after the worst raids had ended.
