August is when Elche is at its most alive — the Misteri d'Elx performances on 14 and 15 August are the cultural highlight of the year, drawing visitors from across Spain. But August is also very hot: temperatures regularly exceed 35°C and the city bakes. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are better for comfortable sightseeing, and the Palmeral is beautiful in both seasons. The date harvest happens in autumn, when you can buy fresh dates directly from the groves. Winter is mild by northern European standards and quiet, which suits a slow walking visit to the old town and the Palmeral without crowds.
