Los Locos — the name means "the mad ones" in Spanish, origin obscure but almost certainly involving the sea — sits a kilometre or so north of El Cura and has a noticeably different character. The beach is narrower and less flat than El Cura, with some rocky sections and small coves where the cliff drops to the water, and it attracts more local families and fewer package tourists. The absence of a large hotel directly behind it helps: the beach feels like something that belongs to the town rather than to the resort industry.
The water is slightly more exposed here than at El Cura, which makes it more interesting for swimmers who want a bit of movement in the sea. There are still facilities — beach showers, a few chiringuitos — but at a lower density than the central beach. Los Locos is a good option when El Cura is full, or simply for anyone who finds the central beach a bit too organised. The walk along the promenade from the town centre takes about fifteen minutes and passes the Submarino Delfín, making the combination a reasonable morning out.
