Inlandsbanan Railway

The Inlandsbanan crosses Arvidsjaur on its long run through the interior of Lapland. Modern diesel services in summer follow the line in segments; in addition, a local association runs the Arvidsjaurs Ångloks Förening steam train on summer weekends out of Arvidsjaur station.

The steam train trips are short — usually an hour or two through the surrounding lakes and forest — but the experience is unusual: a working 1930s steam locomotive in a town no bigger than a village. Check the schedule before turning up; services run mainly in July.

A story
The Inlandsbanan line was built between 1908 and 1937 to open up the interior of northern Sweden, and runs 1,288 kilometres from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare above the Arctic Circle. In Arvidsjaur, a steam-engine museum group operates restored locomotives during the summer for tourist services — the only regular steam-hauled railway in northern Sweden.
