Winter Car Testing

Arvidsjaur is one of Europe's most important winter car-testing centres, with several major operators running circuits on the frozen lakes between December and March. The work is closed to the public — the tracks are surrounded by tarpaulins so spy photographers can't see the prototypes — but several operators offer driving experiences on smaller circuits to visitors, complete with handbrake turns and skid pans.

The most accessible is Lapland Ice Driving, who run a programme of half-day sessions in Porsches and similar performance cars. Book well in advance for January and February dates. If you want to glimpse the test culture without paying for a course, the town's bars in the evening are full of German-speaking engineers throughout the winter season.

A story
Every winter since the 1960s, German, French, and Italian car manufacturers have brought prototypes up to Arvidsjaur to test cold-weather handling on the frozen lakes around town. Most of the test tracks belong to firms with names like Test World, Colmis, and Icemakers — the test season runs from late December to the end of March and the town's population effectively doubles with engineers and mechanics.
