Gotland is one of the best cycling destinations in Scandinavia. The island is flat — the highest point is just over 80 metres — and a network of small roads and dedicated cycle paths covers the main routes. Bikes can be hired in Visby. A circuit of the island's main sights is feasible in three or four days of cycling.
For those without bikes, rental cars give the most flexibility. Bus services connect Visby to the main villages but frequency is low outside summer. Taxis are available in Visby but expensive.
Visby itself is easily walkable. The old walled city is compact enough that a thorough exploration on foot takes a half day; the city outside the wall extends further but is still manageable without a vehicle.
For Fårö, the free ferry from Fårösund runs frequently and takes a few minutes. Once on Fårö, cycling or driving is the only practical option — the island has no bus service.
