Björkholmen

Best-preserved 18th-century artisan quarter from Sweden's naval heyday

Björkholmen is the best-preserved artisan neighbourhood from Sweden's Age of Greatness. The small island just west of the main naval dockyard was home to the craftsmen who kept the fleet running — carpenters, sailmakers, blacksmiths — and their modest wooden houses, most dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, survive in remarkable condition. The narrow streets, low fences, and small gardens give it the feel of a village marooned inside a city. It is a pleasant place to wander, away from the grander baroque monuments.
