Grand baroque square flanked by twin churches, planned by King Karl XI in 1680

The great central square of Karlskrona is one of the finest baroque squares in Scandinavia. King Karl XI planned it on a grand scale when he founded the city in 1680, and it still impresses — broad and open, flanked by the twin churches of Fredrikskyrkan and Trefaldighetskyrkan, and anchored by a statue of the king himself. It is the natural starting point for any walk through the city.

A story
The square was designed wide enough to muster the entire navy garrison for inspection — standing at its centre, flanked by two baroque churches, you get a visceral sense of what Sweden's military ambitions once demanded.
