Stortorget

Linköping's central market square, flanked by 18th-century buildings and the cathedral

Stortorget is the main square of central Linköping — a large open space flanked by the cathedral on one side and 18th and 19th-century commercial buildings on the others. The square has served as Linköping's market place since medieval times, and a regular outdoor market still runs here several days a week in warmer months.

The square's architecture is typical of a Swedish provincial capital: solid 18th-century stone buildings housing banks and civic offices, with a few older structures surviving among them. The central monument commemorates a local historical figure, and café tables spread across the square in summer. It is a natural orientation point and the starting place for any walk through Linköping's old centre toward the castle and cathedral.
