Norrbottensteatern is the regional theatre of Norrbotten, housed in a modernist building near the city centre. As the main professional theatre for Sweden's vast and sparsely populated north, it has developed a distinctive identity: productions often draw on Sami themes, Arctic landscapes, and the particular social history of northern Sweden, and the company tours extensively to reach communities scattered across an enormous geographic area.
The theatre stages drama, dance, and physical theatre — it has a long tradition of ensemble work and has produced some of Sweden's more interesting experimental productions. If you are in Luleå during the performance season (September through May), checking what's on is worthwhile. The building itself is worth a look even without a show; the foyer and public spaces have an honest 1970s institutional quality that is very much of its place.
