Luleå rewards visitors willing to engage with its Arctic character rather than resist it. The UNESCO-listed Gammelstad Church Town is the headline attraction, a perfectly preserved medieval church village ten kilometres from the centre. In the city itself, Norrbottens Museum gives the best overview of the region's history and Sami culture. The Norrbottensteatern presents serious theatre with a northern sensibility.
Winter activities centre on the frozen bay: the Luleå Archipelago becomes accessible on foot and by car across the ice. In summer, the same archipelago is kayaking and island-hopping territory. The Flygmuseet F21 south of the city has a fine collection of Swedish military aircraft. Teknikens Hus on the university campus is excellent for children and the scientifically curious.
