Svampen — Swedish for "the mushroom" — is Örebro's most distinctive landmark after the castle. Built in 1958, it was the world's first mushroom-shaped water tower, and the design proved so functional and attractive that it has been copied hundreds of times worldwide, most famously in Riyadh.
The tower is 58 metres high and holds 9 million litres of water. It has a public observation platform near the top, accessible by lift, with views across Örebro and the surrounding lakes. A restaurant operates in the tower in summer. The combination of genuine architectural significance and good views makes this more interesting than it might sound.
Observation platform open in summer; check locally for current hours. Located on Fabriksgatan.
