Sandhammaren Beach

Sandhammaren is a long arc of fine white sand near the southeasternmost point of Sweden, regularly named one of the finest beaches in Europe. It runs for several kilometres, backed by dunes that rise to 15 metres in places, with a small pine forest behind.

The water is cold most of the year — even in August it rarely climbs above 19°C — but the beach is broad enough to feel uncrowded even in the height of summer, and the wide horizon and shallow shelving sand are restorative. Lifeguards staff a section near the main car park in July and August. Strong currents and offshore winds make it dangerous to swim alone in poor conditions; pay attention to the flags.
