Getterön Nature Reserve gives Varberg a wild edge just north of town. The reserve protects coastal wetland and shore habitat where large numbers of birds breed, rest during migration, or winter by the sea.
You do not need to be a serious birder to enjoy it, though binoculars help. The visitor centre, hides, and flat paths make it an easy nature break from the fortress and beaches, especially in spring and autumn migration.
