Varberg Fortress

Coastal fortress above Varberg harbour, with ramparts, sea views, and Halland's main cultural museum.

Varberg Fortress is the town's anchor, a heavy stone reminder that Halland was once border country between Denmark and Sweden. The fortress stands above the harbour, close enough to the centre that you can wander up for the ramparts and sea views even if you skip the museum.

The Halland Museum of Cultural History inside makes the visit much stronger. Its headline exhibit is the Bocksten Man, a 14th-century bog body whose clothing survived with startling detail. That one exhibit turns the fortress from a scenic walk into a proper museum stop.
