When to Go

Vemdalen has two distinct seasons. Winter (late November through April) is ski season — the three resorts open when snow conditions allow, usually by December, and the mountain villages fill with skiers and families. February and early March offer the best combination of reliable snow and lengthening daylight.

Summer (June through August) is warm, with long Scandinavian days and temperatures in the low twenties. The hiking and fishing are excellent, the fell flowers are at their peak in July, and the village hosts Vemdalsveckan — a full week of auctions, folk music, dancing, and local food in late July. The market runs every Thursday in July. The shoulder seasons (May, September–October) are quiet and beautiful in a low-key way, good for those who want the mountains without the crowds.
