Ystad's compact medieval centre is the main draw, with St Mary's Church, the Greyfriars Abbey, and the half-timbered houses concentrated around Stortorget and the surrounding cobblestone lanes. The Wallander pilgrims add a second layer of sights — the bookshop on Hamngatan, the cinema where Wallander watches films, the apartment block on Mariagatan. Out of town the great Ales Stenar megalithic ship setting on the cliff at Kåseberga is the single best half-day trip.
