Place du Marché

Opening Hours Market: Sat 8am–1pm

The central square of Carouge — a generous, tree-shaded piazza with a fountain and the Baroque church of the Sainte-Croix at one end. On Saturday mornings it fills with one of the best weekly markets in the Geneva area: fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, fresh pasta, flowers, and a handful of craft stalls. Come before 10am when it's at its liveliest.

The rest of the week the square is quieter but still pleasant — the terrace cafés around the perimeter are a good place to sit in the afternoon sun. The Italian character of the square, with its proportions and fountain, reflects Carouge's 18th-century origins as a Sardinian planned town, and is noticeably different from anything in central Geneva.
