Bahnhof Eismeer (Eismeer Station)

Eismeer (Sea of Ice) station sits at 3,160 metres inside the Eiger, one of two intermediate stops on the Jungfrau railway between Eigergletscher and the Jungfraujoch. A window blasted through the rock opens directly onto the Ischmeer glacier, one of the upper tributaries of the Grindelwald glaciers — you look out through a hole in a sheer ice face onto a vast snowfield.

The stop lasts five minutes, which is enough to press your face to the cold glass and take in the eeriness of standing inside a mountain looking at a sea of ice from the inside out. Most passengers are too focused on getting to the top to linger, which makes it the least crowded viewpoint on the route. Included in the Jungfraujoch ticket price.

A story
Eismeer station was carved out of the rock in 1905 to give workers a rest stop during the Jungfrau tunnel construction. The window into the glacier face was an afterthought — engineers blasted a viewing shaft outward during a rest break and discovered it opened onto an ice wall. The Atlas Obscura has listed this as the second-highest train station in Europe.
