Männlichen

Männlichen (2,342 m) sits on a broad ridge above Grindelwald with panoramic views in all directions — the Bernese Alps to the south, the Thun lake valley to the north, and the full run of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau directly opposite. It is reached by a 30-minute gondola from the Grindelwald Terminal station, the largest gondola in Switzerland.

The classic walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg takes about 90 minutes along the ridge, mostly downhill, with unbroken views of the north face throughout. It is one of the most popular walks in the region and is suitable for anyone with reasonable fitness and decent shoes. In winter Männlichen is a ski area linked to the Wengen and Grindelwald networks.

A story
The Grindelwald-Männlichen gondola, completed in 1978, held the record as the world's longest gondola cableway for several years. It was later beaten by Verbier's Jumbo gondola, but the 6.2-kilometre crossing of the Grindelwald valley still feels like a proper journey through the air.
