Restaurant Goldener Anker

Traditional Swiss cooking in a 14th-century building in Unterseen, away from the main tourist strip

The Goldener Anker sits in the old market square in Unterseen, across the river from Interlaken proper, in a building that has been feeding people since the 14th century. The menu is unapologetically traditional: cheese fondue, raclette, rösti in several variations, lake fish from Thun and Brienz, and cuts of beef and veal from Bernese farms. The wine list leans on Swiss cantons that don't get enough international attention.

The point of the Goldener Anker is what it is not — it is not on the Hoheweg, it is not full of package tourists, and it is not trying to be anything other than a Swiss village restaurant. Service is attentive without being performative. Booking recommended for weekend dinners and summer evenings. It is a ten-minute walk from either train station.
